A Purchase Officer in an iron and steel manufacturing company is responsible for the end-to-end procurement of raw materials like iron ore, coal, and scrap, as well as other consumables and services. Key duties include sourcing suppliers, negotiating contracts for price and terms, ensuring timely delivery, and managing relationships to maintain a steady supply chain. They must coordinate closely with production, stores, and accounts teams to prevent production delays and ensure all purchases comply with company policies and quality standards.

Key responsibilities
Sourcing and vendor management:
Identify, evaluate, and onboard reliable suppliers for raw materials and other necessary goods and services. Build and maintain strong, long-term relationships with these vendors.
Negotiation:
Negotiate favorable prices, delivery timelines, and credit terms with suppliers.
Procurement execution:
Raise and process purchase orders (POs) based on approved requirements.
Logistics and delivery:
Ensure timely delivery of materials to avoid production delays, coordinating with logistics and transport teams.
Quality control:
Follow up with suppliers to verify material quality and ensure compliance with industry standards.
Inventory management:
Monitor stock levels and coordinate with the production planning team to ensure material availability, sometimes implementing just-in-time (JIT) strategies to optimize inventory.
Market monitoring:
Stay updated on market rates, price trends, and policy changes in the iron and steel sector.
Record keeping and reporting:
Maintain comprehensive purchase records, vendor information, and price lists. Use ERP systems to manage procurement data and generate regular reports for management.
Compliance:
Ensure all procurement activities comply with company policies, safety, and audit requirements.
Required skills and qualifications
Technical knowledge:
A background in Mechanical or Metallurgy engineering is often preferred, along with knowledge of raw materials like iron ore, coal, and ferroalloys.
Analytical and negotiation skills:
Ability to analyze market trends, assess vendor capabilities, and negotiate effectively.
Coordination:
Strong ability to coordinate with internal departments like production, stores, and accounts.
Technical skills:
Proficiency with ERP systems for procurement and reporting is beneficial.
Knowledge of industry standards:
Familiarity with quality standards and certifications like ISO 9001 is a plus.
